England arrived in Brazil as one of the tournament favorites after deciding to play in the World Cup for the first time. Argentina started the final in Italy as defending champions after a Diego Maradona-inspired victory in the 1986 tournament in Mexico. But even Maradona couldn’t stop Cameroon’s “Unstarted Lions” from causing a massive upset when Francois Omam-Biyik scored the winner at the San Siro in Milan. Cameroon, who finished the game with nine men, advanced to the quarterfinals.

1998 World Cup champions and Euro 2000 winners France are making another big run at the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. But Senegal, playing in their first World Cup, derailed the French’s hopes when dad Bouba Diop scored the only goal in the tournament’s opening second period. France is eliminated in the first round.
