Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a strategic move in the IPL 2024 squad, signing Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera as a replacement for Gus Atkinson. Atkinson, the 26-year-old England fast bowler, initially acquired by the franchise for INR 1 crore (USD 120,000 approx) in the IPL 2024 auction, has withdrawn from the tournament. The decision comes as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) manages Atkinson’s schedule following an extended winter season.

Chameera, who went unsold at the auction, will now join KKR at his base price of INR 50 lakh (USD 60,000 approx). The 32-year-old fast bowler has previously been part of Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Lucknow Super Giants. Known for his ability to clock speeds north of 140kph, Chameera showcased his prowess in a recent T20 game for Dubai Capitals against Abu Dhabi, claiming 2 wickets for 20 runs in his four overs.

Gus Atkinson’s withdrawal comes despite the anticipation of his debut IPL season. The ECB, prioritizing player workload management, has made the decision due to Atkinson’s extensive commitments, including the World Cup in India, a Caribbean tour in December, and England’s ongoing Test series in India.

Chameera, with 12 IPL games under his belt, brings valuable experience, having taken nine wickets at an economy rate of 8.73. In the Knight Riders’ squad, he joins the ranks with Mitchell Starc, the only other overseas frontline quick, secured for a record INR 24.75 crore (USD 2.98 million approx.) at the auction.

The IPL 2024 is expected to kick off between March 22 and the end of May. The final schedule will be announced once the polling dates for India’s general elections are confirmed by the Election Commission. As KKR fine-tunes its squad, the addition of Chameera adds a new dimension to their bowling arsenal, promising an exciting season ahead.
